KAKEGURUI : A TASTE FOR GAMBLING
Is there anything better than food reactions? Yes. Insane gambling reactions.
If you thought Shokugeki no Soma was full of excessive reactions on 2015, well, buckle up as you watch Kakegurui this year. I have to say, the new anime releases this season are really great especially Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul * I have my eyes on Nina Drango, she’s so cute* but that’s for another topic.
What made this anime unique in its own kind of way is the fact that it has its own charisma. Anyone who has seen Prison School could surely sense that the way the students treat the “house pets” were much like how the boys in Prison School were treated minus the prison cell. Kakegurui has this creative visual presentation within each episode wherein they showcase different forms of gambling and how each game has their own sets of thrills and risks.
The main character herself is very interesting and mysterious. I should say, I am very impressed as to how the anime tells its story. Not often do you see a story told by another character in an anime. The viewers see and think through the lens of Ryōta Suzui, a friend of Yumeko Jabami , our main girl. As far as I have observed, unlike any anime where the audience gets to ‘hear’ the thoughts and sentiments of the main character, the situation here is different.
The viewers are most often than not – other than the times when Jabami explains her ‘trick’ or how she figured out the ‘trick’, clueless as to what the main character is thinking which I personally think is a good way to keep us, the viewer, in an edge. I also quite like the fact that the main character is a usually a well-mannered, kind girl but completely changes personality when she is gambling.
It also amazes me that the storytellers are not afraid to show main character losing. This gives the plot a more realistic appeal and it helped me as a viewer get a share of the thrill and excitement while watching the plotline of the anime progress too. In a sense, they really embodied the true essence of gambling where nothing is for sure. Also, I love the fact that the anime art style isn't mainstream.
BTW, I am so in love with their opening :
